Bengaluru: Man held for duping women on Facebook
The modus operandi of Akash was to create a fake Facebook profile and hunt for the women.
Bengaluru: The Cyber wing of Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly cheating women on Facebook by promising to marry them. The accused has been identified Akash Bhat alias Pramod, a resident of Varthur. Akash has duped several women of their money after befriending them on Facebook.
The modus operandi of Akash was to create a fake Facebook profile and hunt for the women. After filtering profiles based on their family background and work, Akash used to send friend requests to women, preferably from Bengaluru. Once the friend request is accepted, Akash flattered women with his cheesy lines and eventually make them fall in love with him. Akash would then introduce himself as a branch manager of a reputed company in Whitefield. After developing a good relationship with the women, Akash used to promise to marry them. He also took Rs 11 lakh from several women after making them believe that he was going through some tough time and needed the money urgently. After getting the money in his bank account, Akash used to snap all ties with them. The incident came to light when one of the victims approached the Cyber Crime police in February this year and lodged a complaint.
The Cyber Crime police finally arrested Akash and recovered a car, laptop, mobile phone and gold ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh from him. During the interrogation, police found that Akash had cheated several women by promising to marry them and also took money from them. The police have got his custody for seven days and further investigation is underway.
