UP: 14-year-old pregnant rape victim made to wait as doctors were busy'
The girl is 32 weeks pregnant and the pregnancy termination laws allow abortion only after doctor's confirmation.
Bareilly: A 14-year-old pregnant rape victim, who had sought an abortion, was allegedly refused medical tests and made to wait for over 3 hours at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district as doctors were ‘busy’.
“We were asked to wait outside CMO’s office for three hours at Maharana Pratap common district hospital on Tuesday and in the evening they told us to come back on Thursday,” the girl’s father was quoted as saying in a report.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the girl is 32 weeks pregnant and the pregnancy termination laws allow abortion only after doctor’s confirmation.
The chief medical officer Vijay Yadav said that the girl’s case could not be taken up as he was busy with ‘tehsil diwas’. The girl’s father complained that Yadav did not even ask his doctors to start the tests.
According to the family, the girl was repeatedly raped by a man who promised to marry her but abandoned her when she got pregnant.
Earlier a lower court and a fast-track court had denied permission to abort after which the family approached High Court. On August 29, the Allahabad HC asked the girl’s father to file an application before the CMO, who will take appropriate decision.
An ultrasound examination will help doctors assess her medical condition and then arrive at a decision.
