HASSAN: A new-born baby boy was stolen by a con woman, posing as a nurse, at the District Hospital in Hassan on Monday evening. Mahadevi, a resident of Kushalnagar in Sakleshpur taluk, was admitted to the District Hospital on Sunday and she delivered baby boy around 2.50 am the same night.
On Monday evening, a woman clad in nurse’s attire conducted a check on the new-born babies in the ward and after confirming that Mahadevi had delivered a boy, she set her eyes to steal the baby.
Later, she approached Mahadevi on the pretext of conducting a blood test on the new born. Mahadevi asked her sister Rani to accompany the baby with the sister. After walking a distance, the con woman told Rani to bring mother’s card for reference. After Rani left to fetch the card, the woman escaped with the baby.
Though the woman taking the baby has been caught on surveillance cameras, it has not been of much help to the police since she was wearing a mask in a bid to hide her identity. Town police have registered a case and search is on to trace the baby. Hospital Superintendent Shankar said they plan to install 30 more surveillance cameras from the existing 30.
