Vijayawada: Deserted by four daughters, an elderly woman committed suicide at Vanukuru in Kankipadu mandal of Krishna district. Pendurty Nagaratnam, 70, ended her life by jumping into Bandar canal from a bridge on Tuesday, a day before International Women’s Day. According to Penamaluru police, Nagaratnam was living alone at Vanukuru. She has four daughters and all of them were married and settled in Nuzvid, Gosala, Gollapudi and Mirjapuram in Krishna district.

Ironically, none of them cared to look after their mother in her old age. The police have registered a case under Section 174 of IPC as suspicious death and the body was sent to Vijaya-wada government general hospital (GGH) for post-mortem. The grandchildren of Nagaratnam have approached the GGH to collect the body. Nagaratnam’s death has thrown light on the plight of elderly women who were deserted by the children. Though the Vijayawada police have started a programme called Vrudda Mitra exclusively for attending to the problems of elderly people, this death has proved that the programme is yet to reach the intended.
