Salem: A 25-year-old woman constable from Chennai is now under treatment at the Omalur government hospital near here after she was allegedly waylaid by her jilted lover and his kin, beaten up and forcibly fed with poison.

This was the climax of an alleged bid on the boy's side to quash the girl's plea to formalize their relationship with a marriage, as she belonged to an 'inferior' caste, police said on Tuesday.

The youth, Loganathan, 26, hailing from Kamaneri near Omalur near Salem, is an engineering graduate and working in Chennai.

There he met Priya, an English literature graduate working as a police constable and they were in a relationship for the past one year, police said.

In January this year, Priya became pregnant but Loganathan resisted her marriage plea. He advised her to abort as his sister was also in the family way and that he did not have enough funds to meet the hospital expenditures for both of them.

With Priya insisting that they get married, Loganathan reportedly brought her to his native near Omalur, but left her in the bus station and disappeared.

Priya later managed to reach his house, only to be abused and turned away by Loganathan and his kin saying, "I cannot marry you as you belong to another (inferior) caste." An injured Priya was first admitted to Mettur GH and then to Omalur GH.

Further investigations are on by the Omalur police, as Priya is firm on her stand to get married to Loganathan.

But some political functionaries allegedly sought to intervene in the issue and complicated the matter by trying to "silence Priya with cash offer."
