Four arrested for gangrape in Chennai
Police said that two members of the gang initially took her to local market in their bike to purchase a gift.
Chennai: People rescued a 21-year-old woman who had been detained overnight by a gang of four men and raped at Guduvancherry in neighbouring Kancheepuram district. The woman, working in a plastic manufacturing company, was allegedly lured by the gang of four who were known to her and who had convinced her that they should celebrate her birthday on Sunday night.
The four accused — Kannan (21), Chandrasekhar (18), Jayachandran (21) and Ganapathy (24) — were arrested by the police on Monday evening before they could escape to their native village in Tirunelveli.
Police said that two members of the gang initially took her to local market in their bike to purchase a gift and later to a place in Vallanchery where the two other suspects joined them.
All the four forced her to drink alcohol and dance after which they took turns to rape her. Only around 2.30 am on Monday did she manage to escape from the clutches of the men by shouting for help.
People heard her cries came to her rescue, taking her home where her widowed mother was waiting for her daughter’s return.
“Initially her mother was not keen on lodging a complaint as she did not want to bring shame to the family. Her tormentors had also told the victim that they had taken videos of her being sexually assaulted and they would be posted in a WhatsApp group if she complains about the incident. Only after neighbours and friends insisted did her mother lodge a complaint with the police on Monday evening,” police said.
Based on the complaint, the police nabbed the quartet before they could escape to their native village. The victim was sent to a medical test.
