Guntur: The Guntur Urban police arrested 12 cricket bookies and seized Rs 1,08,320 in cash from them. Cell phones and some online equipment have also been seized. Guntur Urban SP Ch. Vijaya Rao, at a press conference here on Saturday, said the police department was continuously organising a drive against betting.
He lamented that gambling and betting have been ruining the life of people since Mahabharata. "People are attracted towards betting as they are interested in easy money. In a majority of the cases, they lose all their assets," he said.
The SP said B.V.D. Anjaneya Prasad and N. Viswanth incurred huge loss in finance business and decided to go for cricket betting for easy money. However, they lost heavily in betting. The duo turned into cricket betting bookies and began the business with two laptops, a communicator and 33 mobile phones at Vasantaryapuram in Guntur city.
Ch. Prasad of Kakumanuvarithota, R. Srinivasa Rao of Yadava Bazaar, Sadhu Srinivasa Rao of Srinagara, K. Srinu and M. Venkatesh of Vasantarayapuram, Sk Karimullah of Takkellapadu, J. Malyadri of Srinagar, M. Veeraiah of Sampathnagar, Viswanath, Sivasankar and Siva Kumar joined betting.
