Latehar: Police rescued a 17-year-old girl whose father was trying to sell her off to a 50-year-old man in Jharkhand’s Latehar district on Friday. The man offered to pay Rs 30,000 to marry the minor girl.

According to reports, on being tipped off by a local youth, the police immediately rushed to the temple, where the marriage rituals were being performed.

The locals suspected that something was wrong when they saw the marriage being conducted on a day which is considered to be inauspicious.

According to police, the girl’s father decided to sell off her minor daughter after proper consultation with a woman and the groom.

The 17-year-old was unaware of the groom’s age; however, she was aware of the fact that she was being married into a rich family. Further, the girl, a class six drop out, was also stopped from going to school.

“We are making arrangements to get the girl admitted to a nearby school and will ensure that she is allowed to pursue her studies,” said the police.
