Bengaluru: Woman fined paltry Rs 1,000 for killing eight puppies
The Court has proclaimed that Ponnamma has to undergo 15 days of imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.
Bengaluru: The 45th ACMM court has convicted the woman who had in March 2016 dashed eight puppies to death to ‘teach the mother dog a lesson’ in Peenya police station limits.
The court has slapped a penalty of Rs 1,000 on Ponnamma, a resident of Jalahalli West and wife of an honorary Flight Lieutenant, who was booked under various sections of IPC and section 11 (treating animals cruelly, including killing) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
The Court has proclaimed that Ponnamma has to undergo 15 days of imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine. However, the decision of the Court, imposing a paltry fine for the heinous crime, has left many people in a shock while the decision has been criticized by animal right activists.
Ponnamma tried to kill all the eight puppies on March 15 in front of their mother Ammu. While seven of the puppies died on the spot, one succumbed to injuries the next day.
The mother dog Ammu too couldn't bear the loss, and died in July, after wandering in the locality for three months, supposedly due to mental trauma.
Ponnamma was booked on March 17 after a complaint was lodged at the Peenya police station by the locals.
