Kerala: Unaccounted money worth Rs 1.1 crore seized

As many as 11 persons had also been arrested in connection with separate cases.

A police source said that preliminary investigations revealed that the gang leader Sundar allegedly has connections with a Kerala-based hawala' group.

MALAPPURAM: The Perinthalmanna police on Friday arrested two persons and seized Rs 1.1 crore from  them. The currency notes in  Rs 2,000 and 500 were concealed in a storage inside their  car. The arrested were identified as  Mujeeb Rahman of Malappuram and Mohammed Basheer  of  Thrissur. They were stopped by the special police squad at Jubilee Road in the town following a tip-off. The car was also taken into custody.

The police said that the arrested were only carriers hired for bringing the money from Coimbatore and were not aware of the exact source. Further interrogation will be done by the Income Tax officials from Palakkad. In the last three months, the police had seized around  unaccounted money worth Rs 6 crore,  including banned notes of Rs 1,000 and 500 from Perithalmanna. As many as 11 persons had also been arrested in connection with  separate cases.
