A leopard on the prowl pounced on a three-year-old boy and dragged him into the dense Seshachalam forest area. Local vendors and vigilance guards immediately sprang into action, raised an alarm and several persons chased the leopard into the dense forest and pelted stones at the animal. This caused it to retreat in fear, ultimately releasing the boy. (DC Image)

Tirupati: A middle-aged woman cook at a gravel quarry in Yerraguntapalli of Vedurukuppam mandal under Gangadhara Nellore constituency was injured in an attack by a wild animal on Sunday.

The victim, Sailaja, hails from the Venkatagiri area of Tirupati district. The attack occurred in the afternoon when Sailaja briefly left her workplace to attend nature’s call. She said a leopard, hidden in the bushes, pounced on her. “I let out a scream. The leopard hesitated for a while and then walked away.”

Sailaja received some injuries. She has bite-marks on both her hands and was taken to the Primary Health Centre in Pallipattu. She was shifted to Tirupati by a 108-emergency vehicle for further treatment. The forest department said the animal might not be a leopard and could be a hyena, as was evident from the footprints found at the scene. An investigation has been launched, officials said.
