The 16-year-old girl, had to discontinue her education after completing Class 10 to support the family.
Chennai: In an unfortunate incident, a minor boy was arrested for eloping and promising to marry a girl in Sivakanchi on Saturday. The couple, who were tracked down, worked together at a private company in Kanchipuram and had run away from home in January.
The girl, who is 16-years-old, had only completed Class 10 and had discontinued her education to support the family. She had met the boy, who is 17-year-old at the company and fell in love, police sources said.
One day, the two did not return home after work. Panicked, the girl's parents had contacted the company who informed them that she had not come to work that day. The parents then filed a case at the Sivakanchi police station.
While probing the case, police found that the girl used to meet a boy who worked at the same company and spend a lot of time together. They also found that the boy too had gone missing on the same day.
The police then began contacting the couple's friends at work and school to get information about their whereabouts. They also had confirmed the suspicion that the duo had eloped together.
On Saturday morning, Sivakanchi police received a tip-off that the couple had been hiding out in Ariyalur. Acting on it, the police went there and were able to find them. The boy had begun working at a private company there and the girl was at home.
The police brought both of them to the Sivakanchi police station where they were interrogated. The girl was prescribed for medical check-up in a government hospital, according to the law.
The boy has been arrested under the protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and sent to juvenile home while the girl was sent to a government home for women.
