Chennai: 10 tonnes of gutka, tobacco products seized in godown
The team seized 10 tonnes of gutka and tobacco products worth Rs 80 lakh and five vehicles, used to transport the products.
Chennai: The city police on Friday morning raided a private godown in Poonamallee and seized 10 tonnes of gutka and tobacco products.
Sources said police had been watching the activities at the godown located on Steel City bypass road in Poonamallee, and decided to conduct the raid.
Deputy commissioner of Adyar Shashank Sai and a three-member team landed at the spot by 6 am on Friday. The team seized 10 tonnes of gutka and tobacco products worth Rs 80 lakh and five vehicles, used to transport the products.
They also arrested five persons identified as Muthulingam (32) from Nazarethpet, Jabastin (19) from Tirunelveli, Kumar (19) and Isaac (20) from Tirunelveli.
A customer from Vellore identified as Senthil (39), was also taken into custody.
“We have been working on removing tobacco at a large-scale, instead of cracking down on small dealers,” added Shashank Sai.
