Two scan centres sealed in Salem district

Salem: The Salem district Health department officials sealed two scan centres for illegally performing 'sex determination tests' of fetuses of expectant mothers and arrested two owners of those centres at different places on Friday.
Following complaints, a high-level medical team made surprise inspections at two such private clinics - one near the Mettur government hospital, allegedly run by a retired woman joint direct of health services and the second clinic run by one Dr Vidyashankar near Karuppur in Salem district- over the past two days.
During the inspection, both clinics were found to be doing 4 ex-determination tests, violating the Law. Hence officials sealed both the clinics and police arrested the respective owners.
The Salem district joint director of medical services, Ms. V. Sathya, told reporters that administration will take action against such clinics for Salem district already suffered from a highly skewed sex ratio.
