Hyderabad: Film from a CCTV camera outside a cafe helped police nab two men who had kidnapped a pet dog and who may be part of a larger gang.

Last Wednesday, two members of the gang stole a five-year-old black Labrador named Tyson from a home in Red Hills. They lured the dog with biscuits, made it chase their two-wheeler and at Niloufer Cafe, forced it into an auto.

A complaint was filed by the dog’s owner Jai Simha at the Saifabad police station. The police viewed all the CCTV footage available from cameras in the area and saw the dog with the two men at Niloufer Cafe. They also saw the registered number of the two-wheeler the men were riding and thus were able to trace them. After a 72-hour search, the police found Tyson tied at the house of one Mohaamad Farhaz in Moghalpura.

CCTV footage of Tyson being lured away by one of the members of the gang.

Sub Inspector S Narender said that Mohammad Farhaz in his statement said that he liked the dog and wanted to breed it as he had found it on the road.  “There are no prev-ious cases against the person. We are investigating further if there is any association wi-th an organised gang. No case has been booked, and the two were let off with a warning,” the sub-inspector said.

Dogs that are kidnapped are either used for breeding or  sold to interstate dog-selling gangs. Tyson’s owner, Mr Simha, says he spent a sleepless night worrying about his pet. “Tyson is not habituated to being tied up and if they did, he would bark continuously. I was afraid of them beating him,” he said.
