Hyderabad auto driver arrested for spreading fake news on WhatsApp
He posted a message that the Delhi kind of riots would happen in Hyderabad too
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad cyber crime police on Tuesday arrested an autorickshaw driver from Banjara Hills for allegedly spreading a fake message that communal riots similar to what happened in Delhi would occur in Hyderabad.
After the video in this regard went viral on WhatsApp groups within the city, the cyber police registered a suo motu case and started an investigation. They zeroed in on Rahmat Shareef, 28, an autorickshaw driver residing in Ahmednagar in Banjara Hills, as the person who spread the news.
A Hyderabad police official said, “Rahmat recorded a message on the Delhi riots mentioning that similar riots would happen in Hyderabad too. He then circulated the same on WhatsApp groups.”
In a tweet, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar said, “Hyd police have traced the origin of the fake news which was circulated on WhatsApp to create a communal issue. I convey gratitude to those who have helped us trace this person within 48 hours. Pl don't forward any sensational msg.”
