Wheelies: 40 offenders booked in nine days

Bengaluru: From August 1 onwards the city traffic police began a special drive against bike wheeling and booked 40 cases in nine days, whereas only 58 cases were reported this year till July 31. In addition to keeping a strict vigil on roads, the police are also keeping an eye on social media for people uploading their bike stunt videos.

According to the data provided by the traffic police, 180 wheeling cases were booked in 2016, whereas the number of cases detected came down to 168 in 2017.

Recently the traffic police were directed to conduct special drives against those performing bike stunts in the city.

The R.T. Nagar traffic police on Thursday booked a 21-year-old student, Manohar, who is a resident of Hebbal, for performing stunts and uploading pictures on Facebook.

When police saw the post, they tracked down his house address and arrested him. They also seized the vehicle used. Police said he was slapped with Rs 1,000 fine and produced before a court.

The police said when a minor is caught while performing bike stunts, they also book their parents for letting them use vehicles. 

A senior official said that there is an increase in the number of youngsters performing bike wheeling, stunts and racing and this has become a nuisance. Hence the police decided to track them down, he added.

These bikers not only risk own lives, but endanger the safety of other motorists and pedestrians, he observed.
