Chennai: 220 kg ganja seized, 3 held

Preliminary investigation revealed that the car was proceeding towards the city from AP and the vehicle's registration number was fake.

Chennai: In a major haul, the Narcotics Control Bureau (Chennai zonal unit) seized 220 kg ganja and arrested three persons hailing from Maharashtra, on Friday evening.

Acting on a tip-off, NCB sleuths intercepted a speeding car on Friday evening along Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu highway, north of Chennai, and inspected the car. “During the search, the officials found 220 kg of ganja concealed in the vehicle,” NCB press release said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the car was proceeding towards the city from Andhra Pradesh and the vehicle’s registration number was fake. 

Sheik Ansar (40), Sheik Ahmed (30), and Sushil Thakrae (26) all hailing from Amravati district in Maharashtra were arrested for the trafficking, the release added. The NCB officials also seized the car from the trio.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed that the contraband was trafficked allegedly on the directions of a person identified as an Israeli, who has been allegedly supplying ganja to various places on demand. Further investigation is on, NCB officials said.
