Chennai: City police on Sunday arrested a person who led them to a gang who stole two-wheelers in and around Anna Nagar. As many as 30 stolen motorbikes were recovered from them, police said.

Devaraj (32) of Anna Nagar was intercepted by a patrol team during vehicle checks. He was not in possession of the requisite documents and his answers were suspicious after which he was detained. During enquiries, it was found that Devaraj was riding a stolen bike. Sustained investigations revealed that he was part of a gang that stole bikes and sold them.

Police have launched a hunt for other members of the gang, Rajkumar, 25, Raja Raman, 24, Sathish, 25 and Ram Kumar, 25.

Investigations revealed that Devaraj would tip off the other members about the two wheelers often found on the road and the gang would carry out their operation at night. “They had a set of spare keys made and stole the bikes and take them to their hideout,” the officer said adding that the stolen bikes would be sold to villagers in and around Chennai for throwaway prices, sometimes even as less as Rs 5,000.

A case has been registered with Aminjikarai police station and further investigations are on.
