Telangana: Artificial flavours found in sweets

Hyderabad: Thirty-four-year old Nagaraju Goud was arrested by the Chaitanyapuri police for mixing expired artificial flavours with sweets. Goud, who is a resident of Chaitanyapuri, had been doing business for the past eight years. His shop was raided following a complaint of food adulteration. The police found a expired flavours. Artificial flavours are used to enhance the taste of the food and to improve appearance. It is also used to enhance shelf life and leads to diarrhoea, vomiting and food poisoning. 

Additives are chemicals that have to be added in limited quantity. Sujatha Stephen, a nutritionist, said, “There are some of them who are sensitive and the expired chemicals can also lead to allergic reactions. The additives are cheap but have a strong taste that compels the consumers to ask for more. In the long run, it can affect the lining of the intestine which leads to lack of absorption of food.”

Experts state that there is a need to check business establishments which are using artificial flavours, spices and other colours in foods on a regular basis. With more and more people opting to eat out it has become important to check on the quality.
