Three cops questioned in Edathala torture case

Over 10 years after the death of a Dalit worker following custodial torture, the State Human Rights Commission has directed former inspector, a woman SI and a head constable of Dindugal district to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to his wife.

KOCHI: Dy SP Udayabhanu K S, probing the alleged custodial-torture of 39-year old youth in Edathala, on Tuesday questioned the three policemen including two Civil Police Officers and an ASI who are accused of attacking Usman, at the Kalamassery AR camp.

Earlier on Monday evening, the Dy SP had taken the statement of Usman at the hospital where he is admitted after being allegedly attacked by police. He was earlier remanded by a court till June 22, however, allowed to continue treatment at the hospital. "Usman is accusing the police officers of attacking him at the accident spot and later at police station," said Mr. Udayabhanu.
