KOLLAM: The nursing students of the district hospital here  staged a protest on Friday against the alleged attack on a male  nursing student by a house surgeon on Thursday night. The students under the banner of  Kerala Government Student Nurses Association affiliated to the SFI protested in front of the hospital superintendent   demanding action against the doctor.

They ended the strike after the doctor tendered an unconditional apology at  a meeting convened in the presence of the medical officer and superintendent  later. The doctor also got six months’ extension of his house surgency as punishment for the act.  The incident  took place by 11 p.m. on Thursday. Nursing student  Manu Manoj of Arun Bhavan at Koivila in Chavara had taken  his aunty to the casualty ward after she suffered from high blood pressure.

“My relatives and I were standing near  my aunty inside the casualty. The doctor concerned who was on duty asked us to get out of the room and all except me went out.   The doctor shouted at me holding  my collars and kicked me out, though I told him that I am a third-year nursing student there,” Manu told DC. The doctor gave  an explanation before the inquiry committee saying that he committed the error due to his “wrong mental status” then.
