Hyderabad: Crime OS, a tool developed by the Telangana State Police Centre of Excellence for Cyber safety (TSPCC), is coming across as a boon to the police units that handle cybercrime cases. The tool is helping reduce the man hours of investigation from over a thousand to a few hundred hours.

The app, which has recently won a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) award, is being used by all 44 police stations under Cyberabad commissionerate and is likely to be extended state-wide. Having been recognised nationally, there is ever likelihood of other states also going in for it, opined officials from TSPCC, which is functioning from the Cyberabad commissionerate at Gachibowli.

Usually, all cases, including cybercrimes, are investigated based on the modus operandi (MO), while the OS tool assists investigation based on the handles used by the criminals.

Touted to be a first-of-its-kind initiative in India to secure the cyber ecosystem, the TSPCC developed the tool in eight months. It has options through which a detailed complaint in terms of cybercrime cases can be taken from the victim and accordingly, direct the investigators to proceed further.

Even officers with less technical knowledge or not tech-savvy can proceed with the tool, till they get some actionable information, which can lead them to trace criminals. This is a welcome change from earlier cumbersome practices.

Police can now get all procedural information at the click of a button and also allows them to digitally track the proceedings, compile replies from service providers, evidence and also the required course of action.
