Driven by debt, elderly couple ends life

It is suspected the couple drank poison during the late hours of Sunday after locking the door from inside

TIRUPATI:  Upset over their inability to repay debt, an aged couple died by suicide at their house at Gajulapelluru village in B.N. Kandriga mandal of Chittoor district. The incident came to light on Monday when neighbours came to the house and found the bodies.

Police have identified the deceased as Ramachandraiah (60) and Munemma (55), who ran a small business in the village. It is suspected the couple drank poison during the late hours of Sunday after locking the door from inside.

Neighbours knocked on the door in the morning for some work. When there was no response, they peeped through a window and found them lying on the floor.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ramachandraiah had borrowed Rs 30 lakh from private financiers. He was finding it difficult to repay the debt. Upset over this, the couple took the extreme step.
