Madurai honour killing: Girl strangled by parents
A 16-year-old girl was strangled to death by her parents.
MADURAI: In another shocking case of honour killing, a 16-year-old girl was strangled to death by her parents as they suspected her to be in love with a boy from another caste in a village near Thirumangalam in Madurai district. Sources said the girl Annalakshmi (16) was found hanging at her house in Kilavaneri village late on October 7. The case was registered as suicide as her parents allegedly lied to the police that she took the extreme step as she had failed class X exam.
The Thirumangalam taluk police sent her body for post-mortem to the Government hospital. When the police received the post-mortem report on Thursday, they were shocked to see that the girl was strangled to death. Close questioning of the parents - Gnanavelu and Sitalakshmi- led to their confession that they killed her by strangling her with a rope.
They alleged that the girl had relationships with many boys in the village and that brought a bad name to the family. However, police also came to know that the girl was in love with a youth belonging to another caste and that was opposed by her parents. The police have summoned the ‘suspect’ boys from the list offered by the arrested parents for questioning, said a source.
