Anwar Karakkadan, the district coordinator of the Childline, said around 80 percent of the child abuse cases here had a connection with drug and sexual abuses.

Thiruvananthapuram: The reports of the number of atrocities against children rising in the capital has been substantiated by the latest Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) revelation  that Thiruvananthapuram tops in the number of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Around 1,050 cases were registered in the capital since police started enforcing the act.

The neighbouring district of Kollam comes second with 335 cases. Cases are also high in Thrissur, 304, and Kannur, 259.  The least number of cases were reported from Pathanamthitta, 76, says data revealed by the Commission in the capital on Saturday. Until this year, around 172 cases were registered in Thiruvananthapuram as against 145 at Ernakukam, say police officials. “Because Childline is working actively, more cases are being registered in all districts this year.  In fact the most number of sexual atrocities being reported these days are against children,” a police official said.
