Hyderabad: Two persons from the city who stole mobile phones and money from motorists impersonating as police officers were apprehended by the North Zone task force team of Hyderabad city police on Thursday.

According to Task Force DCP P. Radha Kishan Rao, four complaints were received from the public who stated that two unidentified persons moving on a bike stopped them and robbed their mobile phones and cash, by claiming to be police officials.

During the probe, accused Mohd Abbas, 31, from Sangareddy and his associate Shaik Siraj, 27, were identified based on clues and were nabbed.

Abbas and Siraj, both residents of Sangareddy district were running short of earnings as they were addicted to a luxurious lifestyle, spending the money on their vices. They decided to earn money by stealing mobile phones and cash from the public, posing as police and vigilance officers.

“The duo used to travel on a bike to identify innocent looking persons. They move closer to the other vehicle and pick up an argument and quarrel with the motorists telling that they have hit their bike. They claim to be police or vigilance officials and threaten the motorists to grab their mobile phone and cash. They divert the attention of the victims and flee. So far, Abbas and Siraj are involved in four such offences at Begumpet, Ramgopalpet, Nampally and RC Puram police stations,” said DCP Radha Kishan Rao.

The north zone task force team nabbed the accused has recovered two bikes from them and Rs 4,600 cash, and handed over to Begumpet police for further action, he said.
