Hyderabad: Following allegations that the warden of Malla Reddy Engineering College (MREC) harassed the second year student Sandhya, who committed suicide by jumping from the hostel building, the Dundigal police registered a case against the warden on charges of abetment to suicide.

Three days ago, Sandhya, 19, was reportedly caught stealing valuables of other students. Feeling embarrassed about it, she jumped from the fourth floor of her hostel. She was a second-year civil engineering student at MREC in Dulapally.

On Thursday, Sandhya was found in possession of articles including sports shorts belonging to another student and some cash belonging to students. They were recovered from her locker in the hostel room. The same was intimated to her father Bhuma Reddy.

About 15 minutes later, when her roommates brought food for Sandhya, she jumped to her death from the fourth floor of the hostel. She was admitted to a private hospital for treatment where she died while undergoing treatment at around 1.40 am on Sunday.

Pet Basheerabad inspector M. Mahesh said, “A case of abetment to suicide has been registered based on the complaint lodged by the girl’s father Bhuma Reddy for the probe. Nobody from the college has been named in particular. Following the probe, further action will be taken in the case. The girl’s body was handed over to her family after an autopsy at Gandhi Hospital.”
