Hyderabad: A final year engineering student from Moula Ali who attempted to kill his relative, 19, by setting her on fire while she was on her way to college, was arrested by the police on Monday.

The accused, I. Kranthi Kumar, 21, studying in a private college, is a resident of Moula Ali. For the last one year, he has been stalking his cousin and had even proposed marriage to her but she refused. When his harassment did not stop, she complained to her parents who warned Kranthi but he continued to stalk her.

On April 13, when the girl was on way to her college, Kranthi asked her to sit on the bike. When she refused, he took out a bottle of petrol and poured it on her and tried to set her ablaze. Passersby who heard her screams rescued her, but Kranthi escaped.

A case was registered following a complaint from the victim. The accused was arrested and produced before a court for remand on Monday, the Malkajgiri police said.
