KOTTAYAM: The police have failed to nab the two prime accused in the killing of Jyothi Behra, a native of Assam, who had come  to Kottayam in search of a job, two months ago. Jyothi Behra was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people  at Chiravumuttam near Chingavanam  on May 4 as he tried to enter a house in an intoxicated state. He was thrown to the roadside after his legs and hands were tied up.

The post-mortem report said the cause of death was the injury he suffered on his head with a blunt object. Though the Chingavanam police registered cases against Mohanan and Reji, natives of Chiravamuttam, as second and third accused, they have been absconding after the murder.

Two others, first accused Varghese and the fourth accused Sunil Kumar,  who were arrested, have secured bail after being in judicial remand for over a month. The High Court had rejected the anticipatory bail petitions moved by the two absconding, and asked them to surrender before the investigating officer, but they have failed to do so.

The police have been accused of soft-pedalling the probe, especially as the victim was a migrant with none to  follow up the case. According to the police,  the witnesses in the case were not willing to identify the accused who are locals. Police sources told DC that though some  witnesses had expressed their willingness to testify, they may turn hostile at the time of the trial due to local pressure.
