Tiruchy ex-deputy mayor gets 10-year jail for torturing wife

TIRUCHY: The District fast track Mahila court convicted and sentenced former deputy mayor of the Tiruchirappalli municipal corporation ( belonging to AIADMK) Asiq Meeran to undergo ten years imprisonment and three others including his mother-in-law to varying jail terms on various charges including allegedly torturing his first wife.  

According to the prosecution, the accused, Asiq Meeran, son of late AIADMK minister Mariy-am Pichai who was killed in a road accident in 2011, had got married to Durge-shwari (32) of Sangiliyandapuram here in 2006. As she turned pregnant, the poor woman's pregnancy was aborted at the instigation of the accused.

Meanwhile, the accused entered into second wedlock, arranged by his family members, and even thereafter the accused was leading a family life with Durgaswari, during which she again became pregnant.  The prosecution said that for the second time, the accused and four others namely Mrs. Maimun Begum (mother-in-law of the accused), Chandra Babu alias V S T Babu (30) and Saravanan (28) had allegedly compelled her to abort her pregnancy again.

As the city police did not take any action on the woman's complaint, she moved the Madurai bench of the Madras High court, which directed the All Women police, Ponmalai, to register a case against all the four accused. They registered cases against all the accused under various sections of IPC and filed a case before Mahila court. On completion of the trial, the Mahila court judge, Ms. Jachintha Martin in her ruling convicted and sentenced Asiq Meeran to undergo ten years rigorous imprisonment each under sections 313 and 326 IPC, seven years imprisonment under section 496, two years imprisonment under section 506 (1) and one-year imprisonment under section 417 IPC, besides slapping a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused. The judge also convicted and sentenced Mrs. Mimun Begaum and Saravanan to undergo ten years imprisonment each and also slapped fines of Rs 15,000 and Rs 20, 000 respectively on them.
