Rowdy attacks cops, shot at in Halasur

The Halasur police have booked an attempt to murder case against Karthik in this connection.

Bengaluru: A rowdy sheeter was shot and nabbed by the Halasur police in the early Sunday after he allegedly attacked a policeman, who stopped his vehicle for routine check. The incident took place near Defence Accounts Department (DAD) Quarters in Halasur.

Karthik, 27, a resident of Gouthampura and a rowdy sheeter in Halasur police station, is the one who was shot at. Basavaraj Kanijar, a constable attached to Halasur station, sustained deep cut injury and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to the police, Kanijar along with another constable was checking vehicles near DAD quarters in Cambridge Layout . Around 2.40 am, Karthik came on a bike and when the policemen stopped his bike, he allegedly attacked Kanijar with a dagger and sped away. A message was passed to the police control room and the police arranged nakabandi in the locality.

“A police team including Halasur inspector Subramani, who were on night rounds, found accused Karthik coming near Gurudwara. They stopped his bike and asked him to surrender.  But he refused and allegedly tried to attack the policemen with the dagger. In self defense, the inspector shot at him. He sustained bullet injury and was shifted to hospital,” the police said.

The Halasur police have booked an attempt to murder case against Karthik in this connection. Previously, he had served seven years of imprisonment in kidnap and rape case that took place in 2010. Besides, he is facing attempt to murder, wrongful restraint and robbery cases registered in Halasur in Kalasipalya police stations.

According to Dr Thomas Chandy, Chairman and Chief of Orthopaedics of HOSMAT Hospital, where both the injured constable and the accused were admitted, Kanijar has sustained a deep cut injury in his left arm and both are said to be stable.

“The bullet has traveled through his lower right thigh right knee joint, breaking and splitting the knee cap bone (patella) breaking and splitting the lower part of the right thigh bone(femur). The entry wound is in the front portion of the lower right thigh and right knee joint and exit wound is in the behind lower part of the right thigh and of right knee joint. The X-ray and the CT scan of the right knee joint confirmed the bone injuries,” he added.

Dr Chandy and Dr Vijay Girish operated on Karthik. The entry, exit wounds and the tract of the bullet was cleaned and the dead tissues were trimmed.
