Hyderabad: Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against two men who had been harassing a 17-year-old girl. The girl, said to be depressed by the constant harassment, committed suicide on Tuesday. The two men have been arrested.
Erra Sharanya, a resident of Laxmapur in Shamirpet police station limits, was a second year Intermediate student in Balaji Sri Venkateswara Swamy Junior College in Keshavaram. For the past few months, autorickshaw driver S. Narsing Rao, from the same locality had been harassing her to marry him. She had refused but he kept on pressurising her. She also received unwelcome attentions from a 17-year-old degree student.
Both men would intercept her every day. She told her parents about this harassment. Initially they ignored her but later finding that both men belonged to the same community and the same village, they took the matter up with the community elders after which both men agreed to stay away from the girl. This only lasted a few days. Not only did they stalk her they also began calling her on her mobile phone.
On Tuesday evening, when her parents returned home from the fields, they found Sharanya's hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf. Her father Mallesh lodged a complaint with the police alleging that S. Narsing and the minor boy were responsible for her death.
"We have registered a case for abetment to suicide and arrested both the suspects. Narsing Rao has been sent to remand, while the minor will be produced before the Juvenile Board," Shamirpet inspector K. Sattaiah said.
