Salem: Two held for lifting several lakh worth smart phones

A special team launched investigation by tracking IMEI numbers of stolen mobiles.

Salem: The Salem police arrested a duo for ingeniously pilfering several lakh rupees worth smart phones from a truck which had met with a road accident recently.

According to police, the truck from Chennai was on way to Coimbatore on January 22, 2017, and about 'seven lakh worth 170 smart phones had been loaded on to the truck. When the truck was coming at Kumaragiri near Salem, it had met with a road accident. Breaking open its back door, a gang slipped away with a large number of mobile phones kept in parcels, police said.

A special team launched investigation by tracking IMEI numbers of stolen mobiles. Police came to know that all those mobile phones were being used in various districts in Tamil Nadu and other states too. The team then started to recover the stolen mobile phones for the past few months and 70 phones have been recovered from users so far.

Based on a tip-off, police on Saturday arrested Suresh, 40, and Thangaraj from Ammapettai here and they were remanded to judicial custody.
