Hyderabad: A.P. State Cooperative Bank Ltd. (APCOB) chairman and former AP minister Pinnamaneni Venkateshwar Rao’s wife Sahityavani and their car driver Tenali Swamydas were killed in a tragic accident on Monday on ORR.

Police said the mishap occurred when the rear tyre of the SUV they were travelling in got separated from the vehicle causing it to turn turtle mutiple times. Mr Rao suffered minor injuries and is now recovering at the Apollo hospital at Jubilee Hills. Rao, his wife, Sahityavani, 52, and driver Swamydas, 52, were returning from Vijayawada where they had gone to attend a function at a cousin’s house, two days ago.

On Monday, they commenced their journey back to Hyderabad in their Mitsubishi Pajero sports vehicle. At Tukkuguda village, the car was at a high speed.

“The rear left wheel of the car came off while the vehicle was in motion and as a result of that the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car then proceeded to hit the railing on the right side and toppled at least three times before finally coming to a halt,” Pahadishareef inspector V.V. Chalapathi said. Also, officials said the railing got stuck in the car and the vehicle was dragged for about 50 metres on the road.

It’s believed that Sahityavani and Swamydas were thrown out of the vehicle during the impact itself. Sahityavani suffered multiple injuries and Swamydas suffered a serious head injury and both died on the spot, according to officials.
Mr Rao, who was wearing a seat belt, escaped with minor injuries.

“He is recovering now in the hospital and is currently out of danger. He will be discharged on Wednesday from the hospital, after the doctors clear him,” said a hospital source. Swamydas, hailing from Krishna district, has been working for Mr Rao, ever since he took charge as Apcob chairman a year ago.

A case of causing death due to negligence and causing hurt has been registered and the bodies were handed over to the families after post-mortem. The police are investigating.
