A murder case was registered against SI Chittibabu for killing his wife Sarojana and a suspicious death case was filed for killing himself at the Dubbaka police station.

Jaipur: A 30-year-old civil engineer from Kerala was shot dead allegedly by his wife’s relatives in Jaipur on Wednesday.

The incident looks like a case of ‘honour killing’, said the Enath police on the basis of their preliminary investigations, according to a report in The News Minute.

The engineer, Amit Nair, hailed from Enath village of Pathanamthitta district and was living outside his hometown in Rajasthan for the past many years. Amit married his lover Mamta Chaudhary, a Jat resident of Jaipur, two years back against her family’s consent, the report said.

The woman’s family was vehemently against her marriage and wanted her to return home after severing ties with Amit. However, Mamta’s father, Jeevan Ram Chaudhary and mother went over to their (Amit and Mamta’s) house on Wednesday morning.

Mamta’s parents were accompanied by an unidentified man who in course of an altercation shot Amit dead. The report said that the woman’s parents wanted their daughter to return with them and tried to drag her along.

Amit and Mamta resisted to their forcible dragging and at this point the other unidentified man fired four bullets into Amit’s body. Jeevan Ram Chaudhary, his wife and the third man fled the spot in a car immediately after the incident.

“Amit married a woman of the Jat community in Rajasthan. The girl’s family opposed the marriage, as Amit didn’t belong to their community. They were trying to separate them. The wedding took place two years ago at Kottarakkara. Amit was killed at his house by a group of people. They also tried to take Mamta forcibly along with them," the police said.

Police also added that the victim’s last rites shall be performed in Jaipur.
