Amaravati: A man died on Sunday after a mob beat him up and his friend after accusing them of killing a 19-year-old girl at Adavuladeevi, Guntur.
According to the police, Vemula Srisai and Jonna Pavan Kumar had barged into the house of victim, Sk. Jasmin, who was alone at home, and assaulted her. She tried to fight them off but they tied a belt around her neck and strangled her.
Srisai and Pavan Kumar then hung her body from the hook of a ceiling fan and raised an alarm claiming she had committed suicide.
The accused also claimed they knew the girl and said she had told them that she wanted to commit suicide as she was being married off against her wish. They claimed that they had rushed to the house, only to find her dead.
Locals who gathered at her house, however, grew suspicious after they found injuries on the body of the girl. They tied the duo to a tree and beat them up.
Police soon intervened and took them to hospital but Srisai died while undergoing treatment. Pavan Kumar remains under observation, doctors said. The body of Jasmin was shifted to the government hospital for autopsy.
