Kochi: Ameerul Islam, the sole accused in the Perumbavoor rape and murder, has pleaded not guilty. He claimed that he was innocent and wrongly implicated.

“The petitioner is not at all involved in the crime, and he is totally innocent. The petitioner is wrongly implicated in the case,” his lawyer contended before the Ernakulam Sessions Court in his bail plea.

He submitted that he was ready to accept the bail conditions the court sets. The court will consider the bail application on Thursday.

Ameerul contended that the investigation of the case is over so continued detention is not needed. He argued that the cops have conducted an identification parade and other proceedings so there is no need for his custody.

He further assured that he would not intimidate the witnesses. The prosecution, however, is confident and are ready to oppose the petition vehemently. Arrested on June 16, he is eligible for mandatory bail if the police files charge sheet in 90 days.

He evaded arrest for nearly 50 days, and the cops zeroed in on him after questioning nearly 1,500 persons.Police had also collected the fingerprints of over 5,000 people.

The 23-year-old hailing from Assam's Nagaon district was taken into custody from Tamil Nadu. The law student was brutally raped and murdered on April 28.
