KOCHI: The police will refer the report of the three-member medical board into the death of medico Shamna Tasnim to a forensic surgeon so as to have a clearer understanding in the light of the controversies surrounding it. City Police Commissioner Mr M.P. Dinesh told DC on Monday that he gave suitable instructions to Assistant Commissioner Mr Binoy M who is the investigating officer. “If a different finding emerges from that of the forensic surgeon we will refer the case the apex medical board, which is the procedure,” said Mr Dinesh.

“Police can depend only on the report of the medical board in such cases and the final conclusion in the report is that of no gross medical negligence. A layman cannot understand the complexities of the medical aspect. Anyway I will ask the investigating officer to look into the issue of contradictions in the records of the nurses and doctors as referred in the medical board report. The forensic surgeon’s second opinion will be important,” Mr Dinesh said.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Mr Rajeev Sadanandan is learnt to have told Shamna’s father K.A. Abootty over phone on Monday that the department investigation into medical negligence in the Shamna case was continuing and assured him that the guilty would be punished.
