Hyderabad: A 23-year-old woman committed suicide in Boduppal due to alleged harassment by her husband and in-laws. Vanga Ramya consumed poison on March 28 and died on Tuesday. Ramya’s family said that torture by her in-laws increased after she gave birth to a girl.

Police said Ramya married Sai Santosh four years ago and had a three-year-old daughter named Arohi. Sai Santosh was working as a sales executive in an automobile showroom and Ramya was a receptionist at a bike showroom in Uppal.

On March 28, when she was alone at home she consumed poison. Santosh, who returned home in the evening, found her unconscious on the floor. He immediately rushed her to a private hospital where she died while undergoing treatment.

“Though she was being treated during the last 22 days there were no signs of recovery. In the last two days her condition worsened and she was pronounced dead,” said Medipally SI B. Venkataiah.

Ramya’s mother Satyavani said that things were not well right from the time of marriage, and it became worse after she gave birth to a girl. “Since then he and her in-laws started demanding more dowry and harassed her much. She used to tell us about the torture. We tried to settle the issue but never expected that it would become so worse,” she said. Based on her mother’s complaint police registered a dowry death case and a harassment case against her husband, mother-in-law Sailaja and sister-in-law Tara.

The body was handed over to her family after post-mortem. Ramya’s husband and his relatives were detained for questioning.
