Customs department seizes 2.4 kg of gold worth Rs 76 Lakh at Chennai airport

Two brown rubbery spreads wrapped in transparent plastic covers was found concealed inside the waist area of his trousers.

CHENNAI: The customs department seized 2.4 kg of gold worth Rs 76 lakh at Chennai airport in five separate incidents. On Wednesday, on personal examination of two passengers, Cheng Li San (24) and Goh Chun Wei (32), 735 grams valued at Rs 23 lakh and 750 grams valued at Rs 23.5 lakh was recovered from them respectively.

In another case on Wednesday, Thameem Ansari, (37) was intercepted at the exit of the arrival hall. On searching him, two brown rubbery spreads wrapped in transparent plastic covers was found concealed inside the waist area of his trousers.

Suspecting the rubber to be gold, heat was applied to the spread and 385 grams gold valued at Rs 12 lakh was extracted. On Monday morning, 340 grams valued at Rs 10.6 lakh were recovered from Rajadurai (29).  He concealed the gold inside the transformer of a speaker. In another case, a woman Rismi (34) was caught for concealing gold inside her hair band. It was valued at Rs 7 lakh. Further investigations are on.
