Tamil Nadu: Cop posing as I-T officer held for questioning

The case was registered based on the complaint filed by the realtor Rajasekaran from Chetpet.

Chennai: A policeman from Choolaimedu station was detained for questioning by Chetpet police after he allegedly posed as an income-tax official and tried extort Rs 50 lakh from a real estate agent. 

Police said that an FIR has been registered against constable Durai Raj (26), saying that he had contacted the complainant posing   as an income-tax officer and demanded cash ‘for not disturbing him with raids’.  The case was registered based on the complaint filed by the realtor Rajasekaran from Chetpet. 

Police said that Durairaj along with his friend had allegedly called Rajasekaran over the phone claiming to be an income-tax official. “Threatening the realtor with a raid, the duo had demanded '50 lakh as bribe”, said a police officer.

During further inquires, the police team confirmed that threatening calls were made by Durai Raj from his mobile phone. This led to Chetpet police registering an FIR against the constable. It is not clear if the constable made the call himself or he was asked to make the calls by somebody else, police disclosed. He may get arrested during the process of investigation, the official added.
