BENGALURU: Kengeri police have arrested the absconding wife of a notorious chain snatcher Achyut Kumar Gani alias Vishwanath Koliwad (31) for inciting him to commit chain snatchings, in order to lead a lavish life. He was involved in more than 100 cases of chain snatchings, spread over many districts of the state.

Gani was shot at and arrested on June 17 by the Kengeri police on charges of committing chain snatchings and had recovered 3.5 kg of gold jewellery, worth Rs 1 crore, from the accused and also five motorbikes, which he used for robberies. With his arrest the police have claimed to have solved 105 cases of chain snatchings.

During the interrogation, Ghani told police that it was his second wife Mahadevi, who goaded him to commit chain snatchings as she wanted to lead a lavish life.
Mahadevi, who was absconding since Gani’s arrest, was finally arrested by the Kengeri police from Nagamangala on Monday. According to police, Gani confessed that Mahadevi had told him to commit at least three chains snatchings a day.

In just three months, Gani had gathered gold jewellery worth Rs 1 crore. However, most of the stolen gold chains were either sold or pledged to lead a lavish life. Both Gani and Mahadevi are behind the bars now, the police said. According to police, Gani robbed people in Tumakuru, Hassan, Ramanagara, Ballari, and Dharwad and had 18 warrants pending against him in different courts.
