An 18-year-old college girl allegedly committed suicide by consuming cow dung powder (pest) on Thursday near Sulur in suburbs of Coimbatore.

Kochi: A father allegedly murdered his teenaged son using a sharp weapon before committing suicide at Parayakadu, North Paravur,  on Wednesday.

The police later recovered a suicide note left behind by Pavanan, 66, of Kakkanadan house, in which he said he was taking the extreme step after getting dejected by the violence shown by his son who was “addicted to drugs and alcohol.”

According to police,  Pavanan, an ex-military person, attacked and murdered his son Manoj, 26,  using a sharp-edged weapon between 4 p.m. on Tuesday and 7.30 a.m.  on Wednesday.

“Pavanan along with his two sons and wife had shifted to the new house at Parayakadu from Cherai only three months back. The attack might have happened on Tuesday evening when Manoj’s  mother and elder brother had gone to attend a function at a relative’s house in Aluva,” police said.

Though neighbours had seen Pavanan on Wednesday morning, they didn’t feel anything suspicious about Manoj not turning up.

“Pavanan might have committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house between 7.30 a.m. and 10.45 a.m. on Wednesday. The incident came to light when a relative from Cherai came to visit the house and informed us by 11.30 a.m.,” they said.

According to cops, the father was anxious over his son consuming drugs and liquor. “He used to take money from the family and even had a case in Palakkad. As per the suicide note,  the father was depressed over his son’s way of life,” they said.

However, the cops said further probe was on, including that over the suicide note.  Anything conclusive could  be said only after completing the primary probe, they added.
