Money was from the sale of open plot.
Hyderabad: Unable to meet his family’s expenses, the son of a retired BSNL employee working as a driver stole Rs 75 lakh from his employer’s house.
The accused waited for an opportunity for four years and gained the confidence of his employer before he committed the theft, said Cyberabad police.
On November 17, one Dr Jala Bapu Reddy, a resident of Micasa Sterling gated community at Kompally lodged a complaint that he sold a plot at Kothur village of Siddipet a day ago for Rs 75 lakh cash and the bag containing the money was missing.
During the probe, the police took custody of the driver, identified as M. Ravi Kumar, 33, and questioned him. He confessed to having stolen the cash.
Kumar, a native of Nizamabad migrated to the city about four years ago and joined as a driver for Dr Reddy. Ravi stopped education after his first year of graduation.
“Ravi got married in 2013 and has a baby boy. Being jobless, he was suffering financially and migrated to the city. Knowing that his employer was well off, he waited for a chance to steal a huge sum and escape. On the day of the offence (November 16), Ravi saw Mr Reddy’s wife Laxmi counting the cash and keeping it in an almirah. After dropping her at a function, he broke in through a window and stole the cash,” said Balanagar DCP P.V. Padmaja. The DCP said that the accused did not want to leave the place immediately and concealed the cash on the terrace of the house. The cash was recovered from his possession and he was remanded to judicial custody, said the DCP.
Responding to a query, an investigating official from Cyberabad said, “The land was sold on Friday. The driver had financial problems and took the opportunity to flee with the cash. The complainant has proper receipts for the cash and it is not being handed over to IT officials.”
