Chennai: A tea shop worker was arrested on Saturday for raping a mentally challenged minor in Mathuranthakam. Police identified the accused as Horun, 28, who works in the tea shop in Malrosapuram in Kanchipuram.

The girl’s mother, a daily wage worker, had left her daughter with a neighbour before going out on Thursday. She took along her three-year-old daughter. The minor girl’s father is dead.

When the mother returned, the neighbours informed her that her daughter had gone missing a while ago. She and a few neighbours immediately went around inquiring with the shops nearby and allegedly found Horun in a compromising position with the girl. They dragged him out and beat him up before handing him over to the Maraimalai Nagar police station.

The police filed case against Horun under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and investigation is on. The girl has been sent to the Chengalpattu Government College and Hospital for treatment and medical check-up.

The girl’s mother alleged that Horun, who is from Thiruvottiyur, had been convicted for a sexual harassment case earlier and had come out on bail recently.
