Hyderabad: A high-speed collision left a father dead and his son severely injured on Wednesday morning. V. Giribabu (39) was on his way to drop V. Karthikeya (7) at Geetanjali School. The duo was on a motorcycle that crashed while taking a turn at the T-junction near St John’s Church Junior College at around 8:30 am. A car from the other side rammed and dragged them for over six metres, before halting after hitting a footpath.

The crash left Giribabu, a marketing manager with a prominent bank, with a severe head injury to which he succumbed. His son also suffered a severe head injury. They were taken to Apollo Hospital near Sangeet cross roads, where the father was declared dead and the son, in critical condition, put on ventilator.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Rahim, an eyewitness, said, “I was on the way to drop my granddaughter when I noticed the accident. It was clearly the fault of the car driver who rammed the bike. Probably the driver could have averted the mishap if she had applied her brakes properly.”

Many gathered at the spot and called an ambulance. Tukaramgate police inspector R. Yellappa said, “It seems the woman driver couldn’t control her car properly.”

Errant car driver taken into custody
“She was speeding when the bike emerged out of a bylane that took her by surprise. Instead of braking she might have hit the accelerator. The car dragged the bike for over six metres before coming to a halt.”

The 48-year-old accused, Sugol Shine Surgu (48), was taken into custody. From Imphal, she is the wife of a railway employee.

Dr Brahma Prasad, neurosurgeon, treated the injured boy. “He was brought in a critical condition with multiple injuries,” Dr Prasad said. “We noticed a severe injury to critical parts of the brain. At present, he is on ventilator and under observation. His injury might require surgery. A special surgical team is looking after him.” Naveen, brother-in-law of the deceased, told DC: “We are in shock.”
