Warangal: Student jumps to his death at NIT
NIT registrar Prof. Y.V. Reddy said the student Sanketh Kumar Suryavamsi belongs to Latur in Maharashtra.
Warangal: A final year civil engineering student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the 1K hostel on campus here on Sunday.
NIT registrar Prof. Y.V. Reddy said the student Sanketh Kumar Suryavamsi belongs to Latur in Maharashtra. On Sunday afternoon, his friends found him lying on the ground with serious injuries and rushed him to a private hospital. He died after around two hours while undergoing treatment. “The boy was down with severe fever since two days. On Sunday afternoon he went to a private hospital with friends. It is not clear whether he jumped or accidentally slipped because of his illness,” Mr Y.V. Reddy said.
Police said they have not registered a case. The parents of the boy were informed about his death and are on their way from Maharashtra. Sanketh’s father Shatragna is a professor at Nanded University.
Kazipet inspector L. Ramesh said the body was shifted to MGM Hospital’s mortuary. He said they would register a case if parents file a complaint. However, friends of Suryavamsi said he had a love affair and might have committed suicide due to that. He had slit his wrist before jumping off the building.
Students complained that there were safety problems in hostels. The parapets are very low. “Most buildings on the campus have six to seven storeys but their parapets are small. Some are only one metre high. Student council members complained about this to the authorities during the BRC meeting but no action was taken,” said an M.Tech final year student.
