HYDERABAD: A 27-year-old woman, Gandham Soundarya, along with her twin children Nidarsh and Nitya, died by suicide at Bansilalpet in Secunderabad, due to alleged harassment for additional dowry from Soundarya’s husband G. Ganesh, a barber at Padmaraonagar.

She took the extreme step at the 2BHK colony in Bansilalpet, where her parents reside. Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav visited Soundarya’s family and assured them of justice and support from the government.

Soundarya, the youngest of the four daughters, married Ganesh, a resident of Uppal, in 2020. Her family said they gave him Rs. 2 lakh cash, 4.5 tolas gold and a plot in Yadadri as dowry.

Soundarya’s mother Komuravelli Durgamma said the harassment started when Soundarya conceived, with Ganesh threatening that he would throw her out if she gave birth to a girl. After delivery, he demanded additional dowry.

Her father K. Vemana, a barber in Bansilalpet, said that he would often beat Soundarya, but they wanted to settle the issue within the family. He said that even after she returned to her maternal home, Ganesh used to harass her over the phone, demanding that they register their 2BHK flat in his name.

On Monday, Soundarya took her children to Ganesh at Padmaraonnagar and urged him to take them home. Gandhinagar station house officer N. Mohan Rao said Ganesh abused her and demanded an apology from her father at the flat. She returned home and took an extreme step.
