Salem: In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old girl was brutally murdered by her brother and father after she refused to get married to a person of their choice in Namakkal district. The girl Iswarya, died mysteriously on Saturday and family members cremated her, without informing police, by cooking up a drama to relatives that she died of heart attack.

Acting on information, the Erumapatty police inquired the girl’s parents Thangaraj, his wife Rajammal, a former president of A. Valavanthi panchayat, where they reside, and son Subash Chandru, 19.

Investigations revealed that the family members had initiated arrangements to get her married. However, Iswarya stoutly refused to tie the knot anytime soon.
On December 17, Iswarya was washing clothes in a farm near her residence, when her brother Subash Chandru got into a quarrel with her on the marriage issue. In a fit of rage, he assaulted her so severely that she swooned at the spot. Therein, he strangled his sister to death using her ‘dupatta.’
